It was a difficult decision I grappled with when I decided to write this post. You might have noticed that updates of screencaps have been a little sporadic, if not lacking and I truly have to apologize for that lapse. The reason is because I’m really having a difficult time with Tamara’s return to DAYS OF OUR LIVES in her Emmy Winning role of Ava Vitali. That difficulty has been not with Tamara’s work, but with the story line in general. When word came last July that Tamara was coming back to the show, I was so overjoyed. Considering what happened to me earlier in the year, the death of my mother, being able to see Tamara again was that salve I needed for a wounded soul. So like I know most of you I waited patiently for her December return date. I admit I was a little dismayed at the lack of press for her return. There was once a time when a big return like this would get the full court press and all the remaining soap publications would feature a return article. There was one major interview in SOAP OPERA DIGEST, but for the most part they all have been pretty thin in terms of any excitement. Certainly with the waning interest in soap operas in general, one would have hoped that there would be some modicum of interest given how much Tamara is respected within that community, or that her Emmy win would be reason enough to warrant a few articles instead of just one major one. But then comes this article on Daytime Confidential‘s website about DAYS being told to shut down writing until a deal can be reached.

Days of Our Lives writers, put down your pens, er, keyboards. I’ve learned the team led by Josh Griffith and Dena Higley has been told to stop writing until a new deal is reached between NBC, Sony and Corday Productions. The 50-year-old sudser has been written through September 2016.

Last month, NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt and Entertainment President Jennifer Salke told TVLine they were happy with the soap ahead of starting negotiations this month to keep DAYS on the Peacock network. Here’s hoping a new pact can be reached soon.

Despite the positive hope for renewal there is little to be hopeful for from the message boards I’ve visited and or post(ed) to daily. Some are saying the show is done, and I really can’t say I care. With the exception of the actors, stage hands, and other crew who would be out of work, I have to say with the absolute unoriginality of the current stories as well as the lack of coherency of many of the characters and their motivations, most acting out of character I’m not surprised.

I belonged to the Soapcentral message board until today. After five days of debating whether Ava raped Steve (Stephen Nichols), I’m left with a profound state of ennui. Yes they’re calling it rape. Apparently according to many of the posters most of them Steve and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) fans, they believe that Ava raped Steve. This fills me with both anger and something akin to confusion as to what direction Ava’s return was to go in. Given her previous run as Ava (February 8 2008 – August 04 2008) I was hoping for something for Tamara that would push Ava into a bit of human conflict in who she’d be this time around. With Tamara’s run as Taylor in 2011 and how much that story line fizzled with unfulfilled promises and again from 2008, I had hoped the powers that be at DAYS, NBC and Sony would have realized the gold they have in Tamara and the possibility of an Ava and Steve pairing enough to dare to break up the iconic Steve and Kayla in order to bring together two amazing talents who’d be capable of shaking the show up. Instead was I was given was a sham yet again and a huge sense of disappointment at the end of today’s episode. The utter lack of concern from Steve for Ava and the devastation Ava felt at finding out their son was dead. While Tamara killed it, as she always does, I felt a break in me that has left me feeling very disillusioned.

Tamara has given her first interview since her return to DAYS OF OUR LIVES to Soap Opera Digest. Here she discusses coming back to DAYS, her role as Taylor in 2011 and reuniting with all her soap family on the show. She says some really sweet things about James Lastovic who plays the grown Joey Johnson. Can this woman be any more perfect?

Siren Song

Why Tamara Braun Returned To Days For A Third Go-Round
By Robert Waldron

Soap Opera Digest: What was your reaction when DAYS called and asked i fyou would like to come back as Ava?
Tamara Braun: I was excited. I lvoed playing Ava the first time around because whe was such a complex character with many layers to be explored. Playing Ava allowed me to delve into territories I had not delved into on-screen before, so it was a joy for me when I originated the character. [Then-Co-Executive Producer]Ed Scott really trusted me and allowed me to fly with her. When they were interested in bringing her back, I was so curious to see what they had in store for her. Why now? Where has she been? What has she been up to? What’s happened in her life? My imagination started to churm. I loved Ava, I won my Emmy for her, so I was very interested.

Digest: Did DAYS tell you the story that was planned?
Braun: They told me the idea they had. I had questions about specifics and the writers were open to exploring and answering those questions. What I was told and what became of the story was different, though. But that’s a soap. One day, you are an upstanding citizen and the next, you are a criminal. The reverse can happen, too. Sinner to saint. Saint to sinner. It’s forever changing and full of surprises.

Digest: What excites you about playing Ava again?>
Braun: Jumping into her skin to see what it feels like. Seeing how she’s changed, grown, stayed the saem, evolved or not. her psyche is so different from other characters I have played on daytime. Her psychological wounds run much deeper and the effects of those wounds manifest in unique ways. There’s a lot to discover and rediscover.

Digest: What was your first day back like?
Braun: Pure joy! People were really surprised to see me back. I was asked not to say anything and so I didn’t. Therefore it was a surprise. Everyone was so welcoming and happy. It made me feel quite loved. It was great to see so many faces from the past and to meet some wonderful new people, too.

Digest: Who did you see on your first day?
Braun: Stephen Nichols [Steve], Mary Beth Evans [Kayla], Kate Mansi [Abigail], Kristian Alfonso [Hope], Galen Gering [Rafe], my lovely makeup artists Nina [Wells] and Deidre [Decker], Richard [Bloore], Jammie [Harris], and Adam [T. Talbot] in wardrove. [Co-Executive Producer] Albert Alarr, of course, and Steven Williford was my director on my first day back. I had the pleasure of working with him and experiencing his brilliance on ALL MY CHILDREN in New York when I played Reese. I was so excited to be working with him again. It was a quick first shoot day for me but it was fun. I felt so appreciated and welcomed. I was shocked at how warm and the welcome was. I guess since I have only done short stints on DAYS in the past, I never really felt I earned that sort of family status you gain while working for long periods on shows. But the way I was received made me feel like a part of the family. I was so incredible.

Digest: What was it like for you to get back into Ava’s head after playing Taylor in 2011?
Braun: I never thought of Taylor with my playing Ava.

Digest: There have been a lot of changes at the show since you were last there in 2011. What are your thought on the current atmosphere? Do you notice an excitement?
Braun: There is so much positive energy there; it’s wonderful! People seem happy and they are prepared to work and are excited about the work. I absolutely noticed an excitement. I commented to friends and my family about how the energy there seemed to have changed for the better. It was a pleasure to be a part of.

Digest: What is it like for you to bbe working Stephen Nichols again?
Braun: Oh please! Wonderful! A joy! A gift! Stephen cares so much and he is kind, thoughtful, always prepared and funny! Hecan be silly and so we laugh a lot. You didn’t ask about Mary Beth, but I have to mention her, too, because she is such a doll, a real woman’s woman No BS. And talk about laughing a lot? Honestly, working with the two of them is a treat. I’m so grateful to work with them because they are terrrific people. I just adore them both.

Digest: How is it working with James Lastovic (Joey)?
Braun: Okay, let’s talk about James. Seriously, I wish I knew what air date it was to tell you do look out for, but he just blew my mind one day. Absolutely blew me away. I was talking to everyone about it and asking if they saw his scenes. He has such a wealth of available emotions that I did not realize was in there. He possesses an honesty, simplicity and sensitivity that I don’t see that much in actors his age who are just starting out. I really enjoyed working with him and can’t wait to see his work in the future. On top of being a compelling young actor, he is an incredibly kind and gentle soul. Such a pleasure to work with him.

Digest: You’ve played several diverse roles in daytime. What appeals most ot you about the genre?
Braun: Having a place to go to daily and do the work. Being an actor is a tough business. Most of us really want to do the work and use our craft. Except for theatre and daytime, yo udon’t get the opportunity to do a lot of work in one day. Sometimes daytime can be difficult because the pace is so fast that there isn’t time to get it “right”, or to have another take, but it’s rar that you don’t have something substantial to do in this medium. there is always work to be done, new avenues to explore. Even with the pace the way it is not (which can be nuts), you know that “tomorrow is another day” and you always have nother chance to improve and work your muscles.

SURPRISE PARTY

Braun kept in touch with Kate Mansi (Abigail) in her time away from Salem, but didn’t tell Mansi about her return to the show. “I was asked to keep things quiet about returning so I did. I was sitting the makeup chair and did’nt want to bother anyone. All of a sudden I hear, ‘Tamara, is that you? Oh, my God, Tamara, what are you doing here? Are you back? Why didn’t you tell me.’ I got up and went over to her and gave her a big hug and saw that was tearing up. I think she was a little hurt that I didn’t tell her about my return but I was just following instructions from the powers-that-be! She also thought I saw her sitting in the makeup chair, which I hadn’t. she’s a sweetie pie and my has she grown as an actress!”

As we all know, Tamara is returning to DAYS OF OUR LIVES in her Emmy Award Winning role of Ava Vitali. Here is an article from Soap Opera Digest about her return.

  • [002] SCANS: 07/27/2015 – SOAP OPERA DIGEST CASTING NEWS

As promised, I have a couple of press additions for you. the first is an article Tamara did back in April 2012 from Soap Opera Digest where she discusses her magical time with preparing for her play Tennessee In The Summer, plus her meeting President and Michelle Obama at the White House, her attending the Kennedy Center Honors and the Grammys. She also talks with pride about her grandfather. The other article is from ABC Soaps In Depth from this past July where she talks solely about her role in the play. Enjoy.

To Come: Tamara’s screencaps from her DAYS work as Taylor Walker.

I’ve been a little remiss at posting here due to the recent issues I had with the images I posted from Tamara’s play. The thing that has been running through my mind is, “How to proceed in terms of bringing Tamara’s fans what they’ve come to expect here?” And with good reason. So I’ve been juggling the pros and the cons in figuring out how to balance the needs of this site as well as those of the original authors/photographers and such of the various things that make up a fan website. So what I’ve decided to do is change the policy here at TAMARA OBSCURA. From here on I will post the content in the gallery or media sites and include in the post or page the original source, therefore any complications can be addressed by the fact I have posted the original source as well as comply with the nature of what is termed “Fair Use” for the purpose of furthering the understanding and education of people on the career of Tamara Braun. So without further adieu. I have an interview with Tamara on a wide range of things. First is her play, TENNESSEE IN THE SUMMER where she explains her character Woman. She then goes into the survival of the Soap Opera genre as well as her role in the groundbreaking storyline involving the first Same-Sex marriage on daytime. Tamara also gives us a bit of insight into why she became an actress. I have added the article to the press section as well as cited the original source. Below is a snippet of Tamara’s interview.

Phyllis: Do you prefer acting for television, film or for the stage? Do you prepare for one differently than the other?
Tamara: I like the subtleties that film and TV allow that theatre does not. The camera does not lie. It picks up thought and inner life. But with film you have to wait so long to see the final product. TV airs much quicker than film and daytime…such quick turnaround but often I was too busy to watch.

In theatre, the audience becomes another entity to your performance. You try and not let them change your performance but inevitably one is affected by it. We are affected by people’s energy in life so of course we will be affected in the theatre. If the audience is with you on a certain night it can propel your performance to great heights and if they are not really with you (and the cast takes it in) then unfortunately the performance can feel off…in terms of preferring one more than others… I like them all for the challenges that each bring.

  • [ 001 ] PRESS: 04/26/2012 – TAMARA BRAUN TALKS TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, DAYS OF OUR LIVES AND AMC

According to the latest edition of SOAP OPERA WEEKLY, Tamara’s last official airdate as Taylor on DOOL has been revised to 22 September 2011. There’s still no word as to the how Taylor will be written off, but I know one thing…I’m going to miss Tamara. She’s been a huge asset to this show over the past few months and I still truly believe TPTB never truly utilized Tamara the way they could have.

I also wanted to give an update as to the caps and clips. What is taking so long is that I’m now ripping all clips to HD format. This means it takes double the time to save. I’m so far about half way through July’s episodes and will be posting them when done.

A friend sent me this scan of Tamara with her former AMC co-star Chrishell Stause (Amanda Dillon). The reason I’m posting this is, if anyone remembers when Tamara tweeted she had to go and get her hair coloured. Well this shows her hair isn’t that different from her look as Taylor. So this again begs the question…what did she go to the colourist for….again. Scan included below and thanks Edain.

Tamara Braun & Chrishell Stause August 29 2011 CBS Soaps In Depth @ tamara-braun.com & tamarabraun.org

Some new press additions for you. I have the latest edition of ABC SOAPS IN DEPTH where GH executive producer, Jill Farren Phelps, denies Tamara is returning to GH. Yeah Jill, be more convincing. I also have two other things that have been backlogged. I still have a ton of stuff to get up in the press section and the scans in the gallery but…. Enjoy. As usual, links in the articles lead to the actual scans in the gallery. However, if you want to see the actual scans, I’ll include the links there in post. Also, I’m currently working on getting July’s DOOL‘s screencaps and clips done and added to the site. Stay tuned.
