I’ve tried as I might to grasp this new paradigm of Tamara being back on GENERAL HOSPITAL as Kim Nero while someone else plays the part of Carly Corinthos. I’ve tried. Tried to understand the reasoning for bringing Tamara back to play another character when she was so beloved as Carly. Hearing her today say that name to another person who clearly represents everything Tamara strove for four years and eleven months to evolve to another level just boggles my mind. When I see Laura Wright in thirteen years strip all that growth and dignity back to what I’m going to start calling Proto-Carly, I’m just stymied. There are people who actually like this! There are people who love that she’s reduced Carly back to a caricature in a sort of Darwinian nightmare of base level impulses just makes me shake my head in disgust. And I’m not going to hide it anymore. Tell me again when Tamara’s/Kim story is supposed to take off? Tell me again that Tamara is going to drive her own stories as “Kim Nero” much in the same way she drove Club 101, The Panic Room, the aftermath of being shot in the head, Alternate Universe with Alcazar (Ted King), Michael’s Death. Please tell me she’s not going to continue to be a fourth wheel in someone else’s storyline like Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Julian (William DeVry), or Drew (Billy Miller) and Sam (Kelly Monaco). Please tell me again why Frank Valentini wanted her back? I’m going to say one negative thing to Tamara in hopes she understands it in the spirit in which I hope it comes off.

In a recent interview when asked what made her decide to come back to GENERAL HOSPITAL she said, “I got to play Carly for four years and loved her with all my heart, so I asked my friend who loves soaps for her thoughts on actors returning as different characters,” Braun shares. “She said, ‘If they’ve become a character I love, then I just want to see them — regardless of who they play. You fall in love with the actor.’ And I’ve been getting [on-line] comments from fans saying, ‘Come back as anything!’ So I thought, ‘What the heck? Let’s see how this goes!’” To that I say to Tamara, NO. This isn’t about someone coming back to play someone else after playing a bit part. This is about someone who changed a character so drastically in terms of growth, humanity, humility, vulnerability, and all those qualities you hope a character who has been in a long running drama does. Grow! Tamara changed Carly for all the right reasons. For all the reasons we need to see her remain on the canvas and keep learning those lessons we all learn. As Carly grew under Tamara’s able care, we grew. We loved Carly, we loved her journey… A journey that was cut short when she announced — for good reason — her decision to leave the role in 2005.

I know the deal in soap operas with recasts. Face it Jennifer Bransford was given a shit deal. She was only a placeholder until the Powers That Be were able to bring Wright in after her contract expired from Guiding Light. Jennifer was just a warm body. They just didn’t want to allow Tamara to play out Michael’s (Dylan Cash) homecoming. That was clear. They made sure Jennifer was reviled as Carly so that when Wright assumed the role, the fans would be relieved Carly had been “salvaged” from the Bransford’s “failings”. The ones who failed though was not Jennifer Bransford, it was the powers that be at GENERAL HOSPITAL who thought they could do this in front of our eyes and we’d take whatever shit they threw at us and we’d be grateful Carly was in “able” hands. Today showed they were wrong. So wrong. So like what Robert Guza Jr., Charles Pratt Jr., Jill Farren Phelps, and most of all Brian Frons did in 2005 with their Carly Shell Game, Frank Valentini believes we’ll take lying down because we should be “grateful” he was the one who brought Tamara Braun back home to GENERAL HOSPITAL. I’m calling big time bullshit on that. We saw Bobbie (Jacklyn Zeman) today. She was talking to this Proto-Carly or Snarlybeast as she’s known on many soap boards, and we saw Tamara in the background. We see what you’re doing and to a lot of us who despise what Frons, Phelps, Guza, Pratt, and Wright have done with the character of Carly Corinthos, we are not amused. We are not entertained. I know for me, once Tamara is done I’m done. GENERAL HOSPITAL has shown me my viewership is not appreciated. And I’m not going to take the whole, “Well Tamara chose to leave so Laura Wright took over and has been playing the part for thirteen years…..” hyperbole. It doesn’t mean squat on this show who has done the ole switcheroo so many times (**cough**Prospect Park**cough**) and the ONE LIFE TO LIVE Three. It can be done again if the will is there. I say it’s time. Let Tamara resume a character she said she, “Loved with her whole heart”. And it showed. It showed in what she brought every single day for four years and eleven months. When Wright said, “I’m going to be playing my Carly closer to the original….” What she meant to say is that she’s going to strip away every single nuance Tamara infused the character with, and reduce her back to the shrieking guttersnipe Carly was as that teenager who came to town way back in 1996. Yeah….that’s acting alright. But then what can one expect from someone who never trained to be an actress and who instead took the easy way in. And I don’t care I said that. Any Laura Wright fans who come here thinking I’m going to be gracious. Think again. I don’t have to be gracious when Wright spoke so negatively about Tamara and Jennifer. And I know some of my visitors will say to me, “So you’re going to take statements Laura Wright said thirteen years ago and use them against her now?” As with the current political climate, people have to be responsible for the words they say. Enough with the snowflakery.

Finally is December 29th’s clip, short as it may be. Overall I thought Tamara was really good, though I’m getting a little tired of her lack of airtime. I’m hoping they start ramping up her story soon. And I’m going to say it, I’m so tired of Laura Wright and her aping. She acts like a perpetual six-year-old. Sorry but I’m so tired of seeing all the comments about “how great an actress she is….” Those who wanted Carly to not advance and be a woman instead of that six-year-old in a woman’s body, shame on you. Seeing Tamara putting on her glasses I couldn’t help but think of Carly doing this. Showing she’s maturing. Instead they’ve got her still scheming and making her “plaaaaaaans”. Sorry for the rip but I’ve had my share of having Tamara torn down in the role. Yep, still people saying she was “miscast”. Some saying she made Carly too refined. I’d like to know what show and character they were watching. All they had to do was look at Tamara from her role of Claire Dunning from THE PRETENDER episode Murder 101. Tamara can play devious. She can also play whacked out as we’ve seen of her as Ava Vitali from DAYS OF OUR LIVES. Just like the Joni Mitchell song, “Took away paradise, and put up a parking lot.” This is why we can’t have nice things. And threads praising Tamara’s performance are still being deleted.

Sorry for the lateness of this post, but with Christmas and having family over on the 26th I’m behind. Can I say that I’m loving Kim Nero? I was going to say this before, but didn’t know how to put it and I thought saying it before Christmas was the wrong time. I can absolutely say that as long as they do right by Tamara, I’m glad she’s not playing Carly anymore. The reason for that is simple: I think Carly as a character is ruined. She was ruined by Charles Pratt Jr. and Bob Guza after Tamara left with the recast of Laura Wright and her “taking the character back to the original” stupidity she spewed. Whatever growth, humanity, humility and grace Tamara infused the character with has been watered down and or demolished by Guza, Carlivati and whoever else wrote for the character and by the subpar acting by Wright who more or less fulfilled the prophecy left by that poster on the now defunct IMDB message boards. Gone is the growth and development Tamara infused Carly with. On a recent post on SoapCentral, someone had this to say:

When Carly first came to the show I didn’t much like the character, but I could listen to SJB speak all day. She had a gentle accent and her voice was very soothing. I could most believe that she grew up in Florida. Then TB joined. I finally started to love the character, and to this day, cried when she decided to tell Sonny the truth that Alexis was pregnant with his child, although she knew that he would leave her for having kept the secret. TB’s Carly was a better person. She learned and grew. When JB joined, I didn’t want to like a replacement Carly because TB had my heart, but I liked her performance. She was a good actress. I just didn’t enjoy depressed crying Carly very much. I was used to a Carly with her head up. Then she was recast with LW. Once again, there were great performances, but the character was written to have forgotten every lesson that she ever learned. She was back down in the gutter snarling and shouting. I never liked the Carly character again. I’d enjoyed the more grown up Carly that was written for TB and this snarling guttersnipe just rubbed me the wrong way. All these years later, I still feel that she is more animalistic than was written for TB’s Carly and I miss that.

I agree. She even used my word for both Sarah Brown’s and Laura Wright’s versions: Guttersnipe. An unevolved being with little of no manners or decorum. However, for me now I’m glad Tamara is playing Kim. She can do what she likes with this character and she doesn’t need to recreate mannerisms from a former actress. She had me in the scenes with Oscar (Garren Stitt) at their home. And my gosh I love they gave her an apartment. Looks snazzy.

Not much for you today. I’m just getting back up to speed on things including reloading my computer after its unfortunate melt-down. It’s pretty much a new machine since they had to replace almost everything. So it’s basically been rebuilt. It’s running smoother than it has in ages. I’m just in the process of getting all my programs reinstalled that I need in order to cap, clip and edit. I’m hoping to have all Tamara’s GENERAL HOSPITAL work up hopefully by Sunday. Given Monday is Christmas I’ve got most of my shopping done and only a few gifts to wrap, so I’m hoping to work on clips and such Saturday, Keep an eye out. As for this post, I have thanks to a good friend Jasper who has a wonderful tribute site to the late actor Anton Yelchin, I have four stills from Tamara’s telefilm STALKED BY MY EX where she played the part of Chloe. I wasn’t able to catch it, but I’m hoping to soon. If I’m not online before Monday, here’s wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas. Remember if you’re going to be driving either take a taxi or use a designated driver.

Here are today’s clip and screencaps from Tamara’s episode. I gotta admit I’m still having a hard time buying her as Kim when all the time I see her I want her so much to be Carly. My main issue with this is that she should be playing Carly. I am also having a hard time deciding on whether to write an opinion/commentary piece on why I feel this is so wrong. The reason for the conflict is whether I might offend some of Tamara’s fans for what I might say. Or if I might offend Tamara for what I would have to say. So this is my conundrum. I know for the last few bits I’ve been saying I’ll have something more to say on it, but I’m truly torn as to whether to state my peace or let it go. Comments welcome.

Sorry for the delay but I had a doctor’s appointment yesterday and was very tired when I got home. I had to clip up the episode twice because the quality of the first clip wasn’t what I want for the site. The second one is so much better. Hope you agree. I’m preparing a commentary I hope to post sometime later tonight or tomorrow. I have some more things to say on this episode and things in “general”.

Early bird catches the worm? Told you I’d have the clip and caps up early. Don’t I always deliver? Don’t answer that. So when do we finally call Tamara’s character Carly? She adopted the infamous Carly Hand-on-Hip stance today. All the while I was watching I was still thinking of her as Carly. Seeing her with Rebecca Herbst as Liz I’m still reminded very much of The Panic Room from 2003. I’m also wondering if and when Tamara’s story finally picks up. Within two weeks of her original premiere as Carly from 2001, she was in the thick of things. Here we are six appearances in, about two weeks in and we’ve pretty much gotten nothing. Tamara has not disappointed but this story line sure is going nowhere. And I still see Tamara as Carly.

Here finally is Tamara’s episode for today. Sorry it took me so long to get up, but I had dinner to get for my partner and I had a bit of an issue in ripping the clip. So Carly became a doctor! Too bad they didn’t do this back in 2005 when Tamara was making her decision to leave the show. Perhaps she might have been convinced to stay so we’d have a good Carly instead of a regressed soccer mom. Tamara was really rocking that ponytail today. Loved it to pieces. Reminds me of a scene from 2004 where Tamara was wearing a similar ponytail in some scenes with Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos). I have an issue, though with Dr. Kim’s being the one to do the ultrasound on Maxie (Kirsten Storms). I don’t know about anyone else but at a teaching hospital it’s the technicians who usually do the imaging of patients. Rarely if ever does the specialist do the actual history and work. When I went to an OBGYN I never saw her. I had the resident do my endometrial biopsy and botch it so bad I had cramps for at least two or three days after. She didn’t do it well so I had to finally have my family doctor do it. In the whole appointment with the OBGYN specialist I never saw the actual doctor. So again not sure why Dr. Kim was doing the testing. Ah well…… It’s a soap opera.
